Garfield Minus Garfield or Speech Bubbles
Ok apparently this is quite old, but I confess to only being made aware of it now – and I love it!
A genius called Dan Walsh decided to improve the old garfield comic strips ten-fold by simply removing Garfield. This provides us with a hilarious, albeit disturbing glimpse into the Jon Arbuckle’s (the owner of Garfield) fragile mind.
Dan describes his idea thus:
Garfield Minus Garfield is a site dedicated to removing Garfield from the Garfield comic strips in order to reveal the existential angst of a certain young Mr. Jon Arbuckle. It is a journey deep into the mind of an isolated young everyman as he fights a losing battle against loneliness and depression in a quiet American suburb.
People started to lap up the cartoons, and then another cartoonist by the name of Jonathan Wojcik decided to re-twist the twist, and removed just Garfield’s thought balloons.
It takes the idea that Jon can’t hear Garfield’s responses (because Garfield is only “thinking his thoughts” of course, not speaking out loud) – thereby portraying Jon Arbuckle as completely and utterly out of his tree.
If you ask me, there’s something even more creepy about Jon talking to Garfield without the thought bubbles than the cartoons which has Garfield removed altogether. I’ve chosen some of my favorites to share here. See what you think…
